The ADA does not require a service dog harness, vest or patch. Here is how to tell an ID harness from a guide harness from a load-bearing mobility harness, which one fits which job, what to check before you buy, and why search and rescue gear is built for something else entirely.
Twenty-six states have a law about emotional support animals, and most of them say something different from what letter-selling sites tell you. Every state is here with a link to its own statute: who may write an ESA letter, what a landlord may ask for, what happens to someone who lies, and what protects you in the 24 states and DC with no ESA law at all.
There is no official color code, and no federal law names a vest color. Two states once named one, orange, and both have since repealed it. Where each belief came from, including the organization behind “purple means PTSD”.
Mr. Big and I have been to all of the lower 48 states, seven Canadian provinces and the Northwest Territories, by semi truck, plane, ferry, bus and Uber. Traveling with a service dog is not one set of rules. It is six, and the building or vehicle you are standing in decides which one applies. What a plane, hotel, bus or train, rideshare, ship and border can each ask, and how I pack for all of them.
A hotel may ask you to remove a service dog on exactly two grounds: the dog is out of control and you are not controlling it, or the dog is not housebroken. Breed is not on the list, and neither is a no-pets policy or another guest’s allergies. What the front desk may ask, the fees it cannot charge, and how I got one refusal reversed.
A service dog can sail on every major cruise line from a U.S. port, and the federal rule says the line must take your word for it. What the rule says, what nine cruise lines actually ask for, where the dog relieves himself, which ports turn dogs away, and the CDC form for getting home.
A service dog can ride Amtrak, Greyhound and any city bus, free, and nobody may demand paperwork for it. But buses and trains run on a different rulebook from shops and planes. Here is what a driver may ask, the card they cannot demand, how relief works on a train, and where a complaint goes.
The organization that wrote the public access test printed on the test itself that passing it certifies nothing, then withdrew it from public view. Nobody can make you take it. You should probably take it anyway. Here is what is actually in the fourteen sections, how I decided Mr. Big was ready without one, what the certificate sellers charge for a document that does nothing, and what an honest paid test costs.
An Uber or Lyft driver can refuse you, and around eight in ten guide dog handlers say one has. Both companies say in writing that allergies, fear and religious objection are not exceptions, and neither may ask you for paperwork. Here is what to say at the curb, the one thing never to do, and the three places a report actually goes.
More than half the service dogs in the only research that exists were working in harness when they were attacked. They were standing still doing their job, because that is what they are trained to do. This is what to do in the first sixty seconds, who to actually call and what usually happens when you do, what an emergency vet will ask you to pay before anyone looks at your dog, and what the research says about whether a working dog comes back from it.
North Carolina is two different states depending on which half of its law you are standing in. If somebody hurts your service dog it is the strongest state covered here, with a felony tier that counts harm requiring retraining or retirement of the dog. If somebody turns you away it is the weakest, with no damages available at all. And in the middle sits a free state registration tag, and one sentence about showing it that causes more confusion in North Carolina than anything else.
Texas writes post-traumatic stress disorder into its statutes twice, by name, in two different codes: once in the definition of who counts as disabled, and again in the list of tasks a service dog may perform. No other state covered here does both. Texas also has the widest criminal statute in this series for anyone who hurts your dog, forbids any city from writing a breed ban, and names the service dog in its housing law. Here is what it adds, and the one sentence in the middle of it that does not match the rest.
Almost every page with this title is written backwards, as a list of what each state demands of you. A state cannot demand anything, because state law only survives alongside the ADA where it gives greater or equal protection. So here are the six questions that actually vary, with six states read statute by statute and set side by side: money, crime, identification, dogs in training, emotional support animal letters, and housing.
New York gives a dog that is still in training the same public access rights as a finished one, which no federal law does anywhere. It also wrote the use of an animal in housing into its own statute, in words that do not require any training at all, which is why what HUD did in May 2026 did not reach it. Here is what New York adds, quoted from the statutes and linked so you can read them yourself.
Michigan will send you a service dog identification card and a patch, free, from the state government. They also prove nothing, and no business in Michigan is allowed to ask you for them. Both halves are real law and both took effect on the same day. Here is what the card actually costs you, which is not money, and the three places Michigan protects a handler more strictly than federal law does.
Florida issues no service dog registration, no tag and no card, and every site selling you one is selling a private product the state does not recognize. What Florida does have is a felony for deliberately hurting a working dog, mandatory restitution that covers your lost wages for the whole time you are without it, and a statewide ban on local breed and weight rules that took effect on 1 October 2023.
I bought a service dog vest in 2014 because people kept telling me my dog’s head was too big for him to be what I said he was. I still have the same vest. The velcro still grips like new and the reflective tape is the only thing that has gone. Here is what twelve years taught me about which parts of a vest actually matter, the alteration that saved me buying a second one, and the honest answer on whether it did the job I bought it for.
Almost everything written about emotional support animal letters predates 22 May 2026, or was written by someone who would rather you did not know what happened that day. The federal enforcement position changed, and most of the sites selling letters are still selling the promise that existed before it. Here is what actually changed, what survived it, and how to tell a real letter from a receipt.
No health insurance plan in the United States pays for a service dog. Not private, not Medicare, not Medicaid. That is not a loophole waiting to be found, and it is not a matter of appealing the denial or getting a stronger letter. Here is the definition that settles it, and then the four places money for a service dog actually exists, including the one most handlers can use and almost nobody mentions.
I subscribed for six months across 2020 and 2021 and let it lapse. Two things from those boxes are still in my house five years later. One of them I will not give to a working dog, and the reason has nothing to do with build quality. Since I left, BARK has added a perks program advertised at more than $1,500 a year. I went through the arithmetic and almost every dollar of it is a discount on money you have to spend somewhere else first.
California really does issue a service dog ID tag, from a real county office, under a real statute. It is voluntary for a working team and required for a dog in training, and almost every page online gets one of those two halves wrong. Here is what the tag does, what it cannot do, and the four thousand dollars California owes you that federal law does not.
A therapy dog at a VA hospital was bathed within 24 hours and has eaten no raw meat, because her organization requires it. The service dog beside her is held to nothing at all, and nobody may lawfully ask what he ate. Here is what the research actually found, who profits from each answer, and why this one is yours to decide.
Glucosamine is the best-selling joint supplement in the pet aisle, and the largest analysis of the evidence found it does nothing for arthritis pain. The thing that does work is cheaper and barely advertised. This goes through the meta-analysis, the trial that measured dogs on a force plate rather than asking their owners, and the reason nobody checks whether the bottle contains what the label says.
Recalls get a brand name, a list of lot codes, and then silence. The pattern running through all of them is more useful than any single one – the same ingredient category fails, the failures are enormous rather than marginal, and the people who find them are a worried owner and a veterinarian. Built entirely from FDA warning letters and advisories.
