There is no application form, no agency that approves you, and no register you appear on. What there is: a legal test you either meet or you do not, three real routes to a dog, and an industry that profits from making the process sound official. These pages cover qualifying, cost, temperament testing, ESA letters, therapy dog certification, and how veterans get a dog when it is not from the VA.
Dog Chow does not hand out service dogs, and there is no Dog Chow application for veterans. Its Service Dog Salute program gives money to six nonprofit trainers, and you apply to them. Here is who each group takes, the two that name military sexual trauma, what free still costs you, and what the PAWS Act really does.
A dog that calms you by being there is an emotional support animal. A dog trained to act when anxiety or depression hits is a service dog, with the same rights as a guide dog. Here is where the Justice Department draws that line, what counts as a task, and which paperwork is real and which is being sold.
Three studies of trained diabetic alert dogs put their hit rate on low blood sugar at 83, 56 and 36 percent, and the highest came from authors employed by a dog charity. Here is who measured what, what a seizure dog can and cannot promise, what the ADA counts as a task, and what families have paid.
The organization that wrote the public access test printed on the test itself that passing it certifies nothing, then withdrew it from public view. Nobody can make you take it. You should probably take it anyway. Here is what is actually in the fourteen sections, how I decided Mr. Big was ready without one, what the certificate sellers charge for a document that does nothing, and what an honest paid test costs.
Search this and you get a number between twenty and fifty thousand dollars, usually in the first sentence, usually with no explanation. That number is real, and for a large share of people it is not a price they will ever pay. Here is what each route actually costs, and who benefits from you believing the big number is a price tag.
You went looking for the application, the test, the office that says yes. There isn’t one — and that is better news than it sounds. What the law really asks for, and whether your own dog can do it
Fatigue affects up to every person with lupus. Joint symptoms reach more than nine in ten. A trained dog can genuinely help with some of that. But there is one claim about service dogs and lupus, made constantly and by organizations that should know better, that no study has ever supported. Here is what a dog can actually do, and how to tell the difference.
Therapy dog certification is real, unlike service dog registration. What your dog actually has to be, which organizations certify, the health rules facilities require, and how long it really takes from decision to first visit.
The specific trained tasks — interrupting a nightmare, grounding during a flashback, blocking in a crowd, checking a room — and the line between a trained task and simple comfort.
The most expensive misunderstanding in this subject costs veterans months. The VA does not breed, buy, train or place service dogs, for any condition. What it does provide is worth having, and there is a PTSD route the VA has confirmed in writing that almost nobody explains. Here is what the regulation actually says, what the wait actually is, and what nobody can sell you at any price.
Somebody is going to offer to temperament test a puppy for you, at seven or eight weeks, for a fee, at the exact moment you are deciding whether to buy the dog. In one study of 465 puppies, passing the test moved the odds of certifying from 64 percent to 66. Here is what temperament testing actually predicts, at what age it starts working, and why a failing result means much less than a passing one.
If you searched for a service dog for night terrors, there is a fair chance what happens to you at night is not a night terror. Sleep terrors and nightmares are two different disorders in two different stages of sleep, and the difference decides everything about what a dog can do. For one of them, waking you is the task. For the other, it is the wrong instruction entirely.
There is no application, no registry, and nobody to ask permission from. The honest test for whether a service dog fits your life — and the myths that stop people who would qualify from ever asking.
You already have the dog. So what does it cost to have this dog trained? Nobody can tell you, because there is no independent published price for service dog training in the United States, and every figure online was put there by someone selling it. Here is why that is, what the four training models actually are, and the questions to ask before any money moves.
