Usually, but it is not the actual requirement. The regulation asks for control; a leash is just the normal way of achieving it. Two written exceptions, eight situations where they apply, and the one place they stop applying entirely.
Somebody is going to offer to temperament test a puppy for you, at seven or eight weeks, for a fee, at the exact moment you are deciding whether to buy the dog. In one study of 465 puppies, passing the test moved the odds of certifying from 64 percent to 66. Here is what temperament testing actually predicts, at what age it starts working, and why a failing result means much less than a passing one.
If you searched for a service dog for night terrors, there is a fair chance what happens to you at night is not a night terror. Sleep terrors and nightmares are two different disorders in two different stages of sleep, and the difference decides everything about what a dog can do. For one of them, waking you is the task. For the other, it is the wrong instruction entirely.
Inside a restaurant your emotional support animal has exactly the standing of a pet. The reason is a food safety regulation nobody writing about ESAs mentions, and it explains why the manager saying no is the one taking the legal risk.
64 breeds grouped by the life you actually live rather than ranked one to sixty-four, with life expectancy figures from a peer-reviewed study of 584,734 dogs instead of the usual marketing numbers.
Golden retrievers are excellent service dogs and that is not in dispute. What almost nobody tells you is that the decision most likely to end your golden’s working career is made in its first year, usually by someone else, usually by default. Two peer-reviewed studies say what neutering timing does to goldens specifically, and the numbers land on exactly the injuries that retire a working dog.
What these dogs actually do, sorted by whether the dog is carrying any of your weight — and what the load-bearing work costs the dog. Size, age and screening standards from veterinary specialists.
Because of their appearance and bad reputation, many are questioning, can Pitbull be a Service Dog? The answers are here if you want your Pits to be one.
There is no application, no registry, and nobody to ask permission from. The honest test for whether a service dog fits your life — and the myths that stop people who would qualify from ever asking.
Yes, you can insure a service dog, and it costs what ordinary pet insurance costs. What no policy covers is buying or training the dog. Pet insurance is a business built on five definitions, and regulators have written all of them down: a preexisting condition does not need a diagnosis, signs or symptoms are enough, and hip dysplasia is hereditary, which is where the exclusions live. Most policies pay you back rather than paying your vet. Here is what it costs, the seven things to check before you pay, and how to work out whether saving the money instead would serve you better.
Registration papers, certificates and ID cards are all worthless, because no registry exists under the ADA. What the real tells are, who profits from the fakes, and why they make life harder for genuine teams.
There is no AAFCO working dog standard. “Complete and balanced” can mean a spreadsheet, or a six-month trial on as few as six dogs with four blood tests. When researchers measured 61 foods, every mass-market bag passed and 40 percent of the boutique ones failed.
What the regulation actually says, quoted directly: the leash rule and the two exceptions almost nobody mentions, the only two grounds for removal, and how your state’s law stacks on top of the federal floor.
One question sorts almost every case: who is the dog working for? A service dog works for its disabled handler. A therapy dog works for strangers. Only one of them can walk into a shop..
You already have the dog. So what does it cost to have this dog trained? Nobody can tell you, because there is no independent published price for service dog training in the United States, and every figure online was put there by someone selling it. Here is why that is, what the four training models actually are, and the questions to ask before any money moves.
Every page on this subject lists the same ten breeds. Almost none of them mention that breed explains about nine percent of how a dog behaves, that six in ten dogs bred for assistance work still wash out, or that the best available review found no compelling evidence a trained service dog does more for an autistic child than a well-chosen family dog. Here is what the research actually says, before you spend twenty thousand dollars.
Every page on this subject gives you ten breeds and a warm feeling. The largest systematic review found no randomized trials at all on pet ownership and diagnosed mental health conditions, and nine of its seventeen studies reported downsides. A dog can make a hard day more liveable. It is not a treatment, and getting one while you are struggling can go badly in ways nobody writes about.
Every list says Labrador, Golden, German Shepherd. They are not wrong – but at one program where every dog is a Labrador or a Golden, six in ten still wash out. Breed shifts the odds. Temperament decides it.
Labradors and Goldens dominate because programs can breed them predictably, not because they are better. Even so, nearly six in ten purpose-bred dogs wash out. What actually predicts success, sorted by the work you need doing.
