What the Dog Food Recalls Actually Tell You

Every recall gets the same coverage. A brand name, a list of lot codes, a number of sick animals, and then silence. Six months later another one, and the cycle repeats with a different name at the top.

The individual recalls are much less useful than the pattern that runs through all of them — and that pattern is not what most people assume. It is not that some companies cut corners and others do not. It is that the thing that fails is almost always the same thing, the failures are not small, and the people who find them are usually a worried owner and a veterinarian rather than anybody testing anything.

This article is built from FDA warning letters and advisories, quoted directly. No brand is being accused of anything the agency did not put in writing.

This is general information, not veterinary advice. If your dog is unwell and you think food may be involved, that is a call to your veterinarian, and it should not wait for a recall notice.

The short answer

Three things show up in nearly every serious pet food recall.

One: the failure is in a micro-ingredient, not the meat or the grain. Vitamins, minerals and a mold toxin account for the overwhelming majority of the harm.

Two: the failure is an order of magnitude, not a percentage. Nothing here is a food that was five percent short. These are numbers like thirty-three times a legal maximum, and twenty-eight times an action level.

Three: the system did not catch them. Owners and vets did. In the two most recent cases, the FDA found out because a veterinary neurologist reported a sick cat, and because someone reported twenty-eight dead dogs.

What do dog food recalls actually tell you?

Less about which brand to avoid than about where the system is thin. Serious recalls almost always involve micro-ingredients — added vitamins, minerals, or a mold toxin — rather than the meat or grain on the front of the bag. The failures tend to be enormous rather than marginal, often many times a legal maximum. And they are usually discovered after animals get sick, because federal rules let a manufacturer verify an ingredient by reviewing a supplier’s paperwork instead of testing it.

Where the vitamins in your dog’s food actually come from

This is the piece almost nobody knows, and everything else follows from it.

The vitamins in kibble do not come from the chicken or the rice or the carrots. They are synthetic or fermentation-derived compounds, manufactured industrially, blended into a concentrated premix by specialist suppliers, and dosed into the food at fractions of a percent. The ingredient list names them at the end — vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin D3 supplement — and that is what they are.

Most of the industry buys that premix rather than making it. Which means a single premix supplier’s bad morning can reach across many brands that look entirely unrelated on a shelf.

And the raw vitamins themselves come from a strikingly narrow set of places. A November 2025 assessment for the Institute for Feed Education and Research found that

“the U.S. relies on China for 78% of total vitamin imports and 62% of global amino acid production”

and that “for some vitamins such as biotin, China produces 100% of the global supply.”

This is not an argument about any country’s manufacturing. It is an argument about concentration. When one input has a single dominant source, one plant, one substitution or one mislabeled drum has nowhere to be diluted. It goes into the premix, the premix goes into many brands, and the brands go into many bowls.

Where do the vitamins in dog food come from?

Not from the named ingredients. Added vitamins are synthetic or fermentation-derived compounds produced industrially, combined into a concentrated premix by specialist suppliers, and blended into the food at fractions of a percent. Most manufacturers buy that premix rather than producing it, so one supplier’s error can appear in many unrelated brands at once. Global production is heavily concentrated — the United States imports 78 percent of its vitamins from China, and for biotin the figure is effectively all of it.

The check on that premix is a piece of paper, and the rule permits it

Here is the regulation that decides how carefully an incoming ingredient is checked. 21 CFR 507.110(b) lists the acceptable supplier verification activities:

  • Onsite audits
  • Sampling and testing of the raw material or other ingredient
  • Review of the supplier’s relevant food safety records
  • Other appropriate supplier verification activities based on supplier performance and risk

Read the list again. Testing the ingredient is one option out of four. A manufacturer may satisfy the rule by reviewing the supplier’s paperwork, and many do, because testing every incoming drum is expensive and appears nowhere on the bag.

That is not a theory about what could go wrong. It is the documented cause of what did.

What the FDA found at the pet food company

In its November 2019 warning letter to Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the FDA wrote:

“Your firm did not obtain Certificates of Analysis (COA) upon receipt of vitamin premix from your supplier.”

“As a result of your failure to follow your food safety plan, the hazard of vitamin D toxicity was not adequately managed at your receiving step.”

Not even the paperwork, in that instance.

What the FDA found at the premix supplier

The root cause sat one step further up the chain. The FDA’s October 2019 warning letter to DSM Nutritional Products describes two premix batches made on a single day in August 2018 that assayed at 2,903 percent and 307 percent of the amount claimed.

The cause, in the agency’s words, was “the similar appearance of the cardboard cylinder storage drums for vitamin D and vitamin E.” The wrong drum was used. There was “a failure of human secondary review at the site.” And because “your firm does not have a clean-out step between batches, the following batch had residual concentrated vitamin D” — which is why the second batch was also wrong, at a different magnitude.

Two drums that look alike, nobody double-checking, and no clean-out between runs. That is the whole mechanism. It is not exotic and it is not sophisticated fraud. It is an industrial process with one point of failure and no second pair of eyes.

How is dog food quality actually checked?

Less rigorously than most owners assume. Federal rules require manufacturers to verify their suppliers, but list four acceptable ways of doing it, and laboratory testing of the incoming ingredient is only one of them. Reviewing the supplier’s own records is equally acceptable. So an ingredient can pass into a finished food on the strength of a document rather than a measurement, and in several documented cases that is exactly what happened.

What reached dogs

Four cases, chosen because the agency documentation is public and specific.

Vitamin D, 2019

The FDA alerted owners about “86 total lots of 33 varieties (SKUs) of canned dog foods” containing excess vitamin D.

The warning letter gives the measurements. One lot was found at 100,170 to 107,282 IU/kg of vitamin D. The AAFCO maximum is 3,000 IU/kg. That is roughly thirty-three to thirty-six times the ceiling.

FDA’s description of the effect: “Excess vitamin D in the diet can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. Vitamin D at toxic levels can cause kidney failure and death.”

An important limit on what can be said here. No FDA document publishes a confirmed count of dogs killed by this recall. Figures that circulate online trace to advocacy sites and litigation filings rather than the agency. A class action settled for $12.5 million with no admission of liability. “Reports,” not “confirmed deaths,” is the honest word.

Aflatoxin, 2020–2021

Aflatoxin is a mold toxin that grows on corn. It is not added by anyone; it is a crop contamination that testing is supposed to catch.

The FDA alert reported

“more than 110 pets that have died and more than 210 pets that are sick after eating certain pet food”

with the caveat the agency attached and almost nobody quotes:

“Not all of these cases have been officially confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning through laboratory testing or veterinary record review.”

The recall grew past a thousand lot codes and reached dozens of countries. The FDA’s action level for aflatoxin in pet food is 20 parts per billion; the agency’s warning letter to the manufacturer found finished product far above it.

And note how the agency found out, in its own words: “FDA was alerted about reports of at least 28 dogs that died and eight that were ill after consuming the recalled pet food.” The investigation started with twenty-eight dead dogs.

Thiamine, 2026

The most recent one, and it is the clearest illustration of the whole pattern.

On 13 March 2026 the FDA issued an advisory about a cat food after testing eight lots:

“All eight lots tested by the FDA contained extremely low or no thiamine.”

Against a required minimum of 5.6 mg/kg, measured values ran from none detected up to 0.85 mg/kg. Not a shortfall. An absence.

And the trigger, again: the FDA acted on “a report from a veterinary neurologist about severe symptoms of thiamine deficiency in a cat.” One vet, one patient, one phone call.

It is a cat food, and thiamine deficiency is more rapidly dangerous in cats. It is in this article because the failure mode is identical and dogs are not exempt from it — thiamine is heat-sensitive, degrades in storage, and has caused multiple dog food recalls, all in products carrying full nutritional adequacy claims.

Melamine, 2007

Worth remembering because of what it proved rather than what it did.

Wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported into the United States were adulterated with melamine, an industrial chemical. The reason is the part that matters: the standard test for protein content measures nitrogen, and melamine is nitrogen-rich. Adding it made a cheap ingredient test as though it were an expensive one.

A veterinary survey identified 424 confirmed cases and 278 deaths across cats and dogs. Executives pleaded guilty. Congress responded with new pet food provisions and the creation of a veterinary laboratory reporting network that exists because of this event.

The lesson survives the case. “Crude protein” on a guaranteed analysis is a nitrogen assay, not a protein measurement, and reading a dog food label explains why that distinction matters on every bag, not just the adulterated ones.

The pattern, which is the actual point

Put the four together and four things fall out.

1. It is always the micro-ingredients. Not the meat. Not the grain. Not the thing on the front of the bag or the thing the internet argues about. Vitamins, minerals, and a mold toxin.

2. The failures are orders of magnitude. Thirty-three times a maximum. Twenty-eight times an action level. Twenty-nine hundred percent of claim. Zero against a minimum. Nothing in this article is a food that was slightly off, because slightly off does not make a dog sick fast enough to be noticed.

3. Detection runs backwards. The food does not fail a test and get pulled. Animals get sick, somebody reports it, and testing follows. That is a functioning reporting system doing its job — but it means the dogs are the test.

4. The same process fails in both directions. A milk replacer was recalled in 2026 for “variable levels of Vitamin D resulting in both low and elevated levels”, with complaints of rickets. The same line, over-dosing and under-dosing. That is a mixing and verification failure, not a formulation one, and no amount of reading the ingredient list would reveal it.

How does the FDA find out about a dog food problem?

Usually from the public and from veterinarians, after animals are already ill. In the 2026 thiamine case the agency acted on a report from a veterinary neurologist treating a sick cat. In the 2020 aflatoxin case it was alerted to reports of at least 28 dogs that had died. The FDA does not test pet food before it is sold and does not approve formulas in advance, so consumer and veterinary reports through its Safety Reporting Portal are the primary early-warning system.

What are the signs of vitamin D poisoning in a dog?

The FDA lists vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss, and states that at toxic levels vitamin D can cause kidney failure and death. The signs are easy to mistake for other illnesses, which is part of why these cases are usually identified late. If your dog shows several of them together, that is a same-day veterinary call regardless of whether the food has been recalled.

What a recall does and does not say about a brand

This is where recall lists get misused, and it is worth being careful.

A recall is evidence that a problem was found. It is not, by itself, evidence that a company is worse than one with a clean list. A brand with no recall history may have a better process — or a smaller footprint, fewer products, less scrutiny, or simply better luck.

And many brands do not own the plant that makes their food. Contract manufacturers produce for multiple brands on the same lines, which means one plant’s failure can surface under several names that appear unconnected, while the brand owner may not control the fix.

What a recall history can tell you is how a company behaved afterwards: how fast it acted, how specific it was about lots and causes, whether it fought the finding or published it, and whether the same failure recurred.

Does a recall mean a dog food brand is bad?

Not on its own. A recall means a problem was identified and the product was pulled, which is the system working at the last possible moment. A brand with no recall history is not automatically safer — it may simply be smaller, newer, or less examined. More informative than the recall itself is what followed it: how quickly the company acted, whether it identified the cause specifically, and whether the same failure happened again.

What to actually do

  1. Photograph the bag before you throw it away. The lot code and the best-by date, in one picture, on your phone. This is the single most useful habit in this article. Recalls are announced by lot, and without the code you cannot tell whether yours is affected — and neither can your vet.
  2. Sign up for the FDA’s recall alerts rather than relying on social media, where the lot codes get lost and the panic does not.
  3. Report it if your dog gets sick and you suspect the food. The FDA’s Safety Reporting Portal takes reports from owners directly. Every case above started with somebody doing this.
  4. Keep a sample of the food if you are reporting a problem. Sealed, in the original packaging if you have it. Testing needs the actual product.
  5. Know the three sets of signs. Vitamin D excess: vomiting, appetite loss, increased thirst and urination, drooling, weight loss. Aflatoxin: sluggishness, appetite loss, vomiting, jaundice, diarrhea. Thiamine deficiency: appetite loss, then neurological signs — wobbliness, a hunched neck, seizures. All three are veterinary emergencies, not wait-and-see.
  6. Do not panic-switch. If your food is not recalled, an abrupt change causes an immediate problem to solve a hypothetical one. If it is recalled, stop feeding it, keep the packaging, and call your vet.

How do I report a problem with my dog’s food?

Through the FDA’s Safety Reporting Portal, which accepts reports directly from pet owners as well as from veterinarians. Keep the packaging and a sealed sample of the food, note the lot code and best-by date, and record the dates your dog started eating it and became unwell. Every case described above began with somebody filing a report like that, so it is not a formality — consumer and veterinary reports are how these problems are found.

The questions worth asking a manufacturer

Everything in this article points at the same two questions, and neither is answerable from the label:

Do you own the plant that makes this food, or is it made under contract?

Do you test incoming ingredients, or do you verify suppliers by reviewing their records?

The second one is the whole subject in a sentence. The regulation permits either answer. Companies that test will tell you they test, in detail, quickly. A vague answer to a specific question is itself the answer.

What “complete and balanced” actually means covers the rest of the questions worth asking, and why the claim on the bag cannot answer any of them.

Why it stays like this

There is no villain in this story, which is exactly why it keeps happening.

Testing every incoming drum of premix costs real money and produces nothing a customer can see. It does not go on the bag. It cannot be photographed for an advert. It has no effect on sales in a good year, and its entire value is a disaster that then does not occur — which nobody can point to afterwards.

Meanwhile the rule says a paperwork review is acceptable. So paperwork becomes the market rate, and it holds until a drum of vitamin D looks like a drum of vitamin E on a Thursday morning.

The one control that would have caught every case in this article is invisible on the shelf, invisible in the advertising, and legally optional. That is not a conspiracy. It is what happens when a safeguard has no marketing value.

Which is why the useful response to a recall is not switching brands in a hurry. It is photographing the lot code, knowing the signs, and asking one specific question of whoever makes the food you buy.
